To tingle or not?

How exactly do tingle tanning products work? I know they "tingle" when your skin is ready to tan, but what does it do? I have a small baby and am afraid that my lotion might transfer to her. After all, it isn't good to shower immediately after tanning, right? I don't want to use anything that may cause her skin any damage or discomfort
