HI--I disagree with a comment made by another person on here, that tanning beds cannot cause cancer it not abused. If someone is high risk for skin cancer, tanning beds are not a good idea. Tanning beds are believed to help avoid internal cancers before you get it, but increases your risk of skin cancers. And everyone is different, one person can go it regular sessions and never get skin cancer, while someone else can go in only a few months and be at risk. Smartest thing to do is know your skin and your body and listen to it. Tan smart and tan safe. Start out very low mins. If you are really white go 2-3 times for 5 mins no more than 10 mins then work your way up to the max, if any signs of pink skin skip a day or two. Use the tanning lotions in the steps recommended and use it plentiful. Use moisturizing lotions in between sessions, after showering and before going to bed. Don't tan before 1 hr after showering, and don't shower before 2 hrs after tanning, 5-7 hrs after tanning if using a lotion with bronzers. If you are pregnant talk to your doctor before tanning and never tan the first tri of pregnancy. Taking your time getting a tan will pay off. Once you have a good tan you can just tan 1-2 times a week to keep it. Some people tan once every other week and it is enough to maintain their tanned look. Don't use the tingle factor tanning lotions or hot or T with a number until after you have a good tan, they are for experienced tanners only (and for good reason). If you all of a sudden cannot tan any darker but would like to be do not tan longer time or more times a day, it will not help, go a couple sessions using a good step on lotion then go back to a maximizer. Remember to drink plenty of water and use a good moisturizer. Being hydrated inside and out will help with a healthy looking tan and will also help you tan better and faster. Dry skin burns better tahn it tans. I also use an exfoliating shower body wash before beginning my tanning sessions for the season and then once every 1-2 weeks. Good luck. Bird

Even Sun by: Anonymous
Even the sun can give you a skin cancer if you are abusive enough, so in line with this, Tanning Beds can't cause cancer if and only if you have the self discipline in terms of using it, and make sure to have a Tanning Beds that is highly recommended to use.

re: Tanning Time For Fair Skin by: Anonymous
I forgot to mention, let there be plenty of time in between showers and tanning, it will slow down your tan or may stop you from tanning all together. Wait at least 2 hours after tanning before showering or bathing, 5-7 hours if using a bronzer tanning lotion, and wait at least 1 hour before tanning after showering or bathing, you will burn easier if tanning too soon (some people may). Use common sense, don't rush it and your tan will show you had patience I promise you.

RE:Tanning Time For Fair Skin by: Anonymous
HI Jenna--Tanning in the tanning bed is just the same as anything else, if you abuse it and don't tan smart, Yes it is dangerous. Esp. for fair skin. If you are a minor, or not at least 17 (at some salons) you cannot tan without your mother or father signing for permission. If your skin is that fair you would need to start only at 5 mins for the first two sessions until you know how it will do fro your skin. you do not want to burn, it is unhealthy and your tan will not be as nice. That is the same with tanning beds an the natural sun. If you are high risk for skin cancer (smoker, past skin cancer, etc.) tanning beds and the sun puts you at even a higher risk of skin cancer. Some doctors have reported tanning beds are lower risk than the natural sun for internal cancers. Smoking is riskier than a tanning bed, smoking there are 14 cancer causing agents in one cigarette.
IF you tan smart you can tan safely, if you are not high risk for skin cancer. Once you know 5 mins is fine for you without any redness to your skin, go 10 mins for a few sessions, about 4, then if no redness still go 15 mins a few sessions. Most salons has a 20 min limit.
Always use lotion for indoor tanning, and it is good to use a GOOD moisturizer for tanners after tanning and just because. Dry skin does not tan well but burns easier.
Once you have a good tan you will not need to tan anymore than once a week to maintain it. No more than 20 mins.
