Is The Tanning Tax Legitimate?
The new tanning tax that is now in place is one of the most frustrating things for tanning salon owners and people like me who are fed up with the ridiculous laws that the government pretends are legitimate.
The fact is, the tanning tax replaced the tax on Botox. Also known as the Botax. It would bring in 5.7 billion over ten years. But, oh no! It angered pharmaceutical companies, doctors and women's groups. And guess who has tons of lobbying power? The Pharmaceutical companies and the AMA. So if you piss off the pharmaceutical companies and doctors, their lobbying power will come sweeping in and change Congresses minds. And that's exactly what happened with this new tanning tax.... A coalition of plastic surgeons, a women's group, medical associations and pharmaceutical makers were distraught when Senate majority leader Harry Reid slipped the so-called Botax levy into the health care bill late last month in hopes of raising $5.8 billion over the next 10 years. So instead of getting tons of revenue from a small 5% tax on expensive plastic surgery treatments and Botox injections, instead, they said, 'Hey, go after the tanning industry and put a 10% tax on them!" I am sure a lot of 'incentives' where given to Harry Reid as well (Harry introduced the Botax bill). And they are using fuzzy math and a bogus excuses to go after tanning salons with the tanning tax. With a 10% on tanning beds they claim that they will raise the same amount from tanning salons. But realistic studies show that it will be 2.7 billion over ten years, and I am certain that is high.
But the most frustrating thing is that many people have died from Botox injections and many MANY more have major health problems and disfigurement from Botox. And that doesn't include breast implant problems and plastic surgery. Not so from tanning in a tanning bed. Yes, if you go often and for long periods of time, you will increase your chances of skin cancer. That is why tanning salons and the tanning industry want you to tan moderately because that is where you will derive the benefits. There are those that over do it. But you are going to get people who over do it when it comes to athletics, drinking, drugs, speeding, etc. etc. It's just the way it is. But putting the tanning tax on the tanning industry is easy because tanning is an easy target! Look, people are dieing and getting disfigured and developing major health problems from Botox, breast implants, and plastic surgery. The tax on these procedures makes much more sense, it's only 5% compared to 10% for the tanning tax, and none of it is good for you in any way! Secondly, tanning moderately has benefits. But the pharmaceutical companies, AMA and Dermatologists want to scare you into thinking that the sun is bad for you, and they have succeeded. They have succeeded in scaring people into staying indoors and slathering on sunscreen to the point now that there is an epidemic Vitamin D deficiency, and people have major skin problems from lack of UV.
We need UV to maintain a healthy condition! But the Dermatologists think we are stupid because they think that if they go on the record and say, "Yes, we need 10-20 minutes of UV per day" that we are going to go out and lay in the sun all day, and lay in a tanning bed and get burned. So they are taking the opposite and saying, 'Put sun screen on and stay out of the sun'. Read this recent article on one example of a Sun Scare in the medical industry. So this tanning tax is ridiculous. It shows how easily Congress is manipulated by Lobbyists, and how the truth is being hidden behind those that we are supposed to trust. So why can't the tanning industry get their voices heard? Because the tanning industry is a tiny little ant compared to the medical and pharmaceutical community. By the way, who makes billions from scaring people into believing the sun is bad for you? The people who make Sunscreen: Pharmaceutical companies. And one more thing on this tanning tax. At the very last minute they slipped this in: Health clubs offering tanning as an 'incidental service' are exempt from the tanning tax! So even the health club industry has more lobbying power than we do! Isn't that a joke? The reason they are supposed to be taxing tanning salons is because they claim that it's bad for you. So why should anyone offering tanning services be exempt? Because Congress is loaded with people who are easily influenced with money and favors. It is so frustrating. Can you tell? I have articles below that support my argument on the tanning tax. But please post your comments here, and then go ahead and read the articles...
