The tanning process will actually continue for a period of time after a tanning session.
Taking a shower will remove the mantel acid from your skin and slow down or stop this continued tanning process.
It is recommended you not shower for 2 hours after your tanning session or 1 hour before.

RE: Showering After Tanning? by: BirdzWord
Some people it does not matter, they tan no matter what, everyone is different, but for those of us, like me, who have a harder time tanning, we have to follow certain rules. Those include but not limited to:
Do not shower for at least two hours after tanning, five to six hours if using a bronzer lotion. Reason being you do tan for up to two hours after a session and for bronzers that give an immediate result it may take longer to set into your skin good, so for best results, don't take chances and wait on the shower.
Do not tan for at least one hour after showering.
Moisturize all the time with a lotion especially for tanners, I use Body Drench. To see if it works for you (you can get on ebay pretty cheap) apply generous amount to your feet and immediately put on clean socks. Doing this just before bed will show improvement in your feet after one or two times.
In addition to using a moisturizer, use a tanning lotion just before a session, then right after getting out of the tanning bed either use Body Drench or an after tanning lotion aka a tan extender.
Don't rush your tan, it will look it, start slow for your skin, if you get any redness that stays skip a session, we don't want to burn. If you follow these rules and use the tanning lotions in steps as they are formulated then you will tan, some tan slower than others, but your wait will be worth it and your tan will reward you.

That is up to you and your situation, but it is better to wait as long as you possibly can.
