Organic Spray Tan!
An organic spray tan differs from the regular spray tan that contains some potentially harmful chemicals. DHA, the extract used which is a vegetable derivative provides a natural looking appearance to your tan and it is often combined with mineral salt bronzers. The government regulates DHA and they allow several contaminants in the solution: lead, arsenic and mercury. According to a news organization, arsenic and mercury are allowed because they were originally approved to apply it topically. It was not meant to be in contact with your lungs, membranes (which will get the contaminants into your bloodstream), and lips. Other organic spray tan service providers (tanning salons) claim that their organic spray tanning solution is alcohol free and preservative free. For example, one tanning salon website claims that their organic airbrush tanning solution is a, "...water-based moisturizing formula that contains Organic aloe Vera, Organic vegetable base Glycerin, Organic white Green Tea Extract and Pro-Vitamins." Their organic airbrush solution is touted to be alcohol and preservative free as well. Organic spray tans should not contain these contaminants. When you are sprayed, it is a technique of approximately 10 to 15 minutes if you use an airbrush tanning system, or it's just a few seconds using a spray tan booth like Mystic Tan. There are also many organic spray tan products you can use yourself. They are commonly called self tanners which come in spray or cream form. In an organic spray tan there is usually no alcohol or perfume along with no preservatives. The tanning solution is usually odor free, unlike the chemical tans. These tans usually last up to a week and is dependent on your skin and how you prepared yourself before the tan. To extend the life of the tan, it is highly recommended to use a moisturizer. To be certain you don't get these contaminants into your bloodstream, use a self tanner at home and apply it yourself being careful not to get it on any areas described above. Or, use an organic spray tan or organic self tanner. How to Prepare for your Spray Tan (Use these tips for both regular and organic tanning. Ask you certified airbrush tanning professional for specific details for before and after your tan -- regarding their organic or non-organic products): Before your organic spray tan, it is necessary to do a body scrub to exfoliate the skin. Remove all perfumes, chemicals, oils, moisturizers, etc. from your skin. The skin should not have absolutely anything on it. If you apply anything to the skin, it will tend to clog your pores and the penetration of the self tanner will be limited. Always check areas that tend to be rough when exfoliating. Don't even apply your deodorant and especially no makeup prior to your spray. The only thing you may want to put on is some lip balm, so the spray does not get onto your lips. What to Bring. Some people prefer to be sprayed with a bathing suit, though there are some more daring people who want the "all-over" tan. Since the spray will most likely get onto your suit, it is suggested to wear either an old bathing suit or old bra and panties, remembering that what you wear will create a tan line. So, if you have a special suit, make sure the tan lines will match up. After the tan, old baggy clothing usually made of cotton or a natural fiber is the best. If any organic spray tan color gets onto your clothing after the tanning, it usually washes out in your normal wash detergent. There are man-made materials that will have the possibility of staining. For your feet, it is best to wear either slippers or sandals. Bring a shower cap for your hair or use the disposable ones that should be provided. Some spas provide a moisture barrier cream for fingernails and toenails. There are also some salons who have a spray tanner that does not start to change color which is called a delayed tan. This is for some people who may have to rush out somewhere. Use nasal plugs, lip protection, and eye protection, plus any other 'membrane' protection if you are using regular spray tanning equipment or products and are concerned about the DHA getting into your bloodstream. Otherwise, an organic spray tan does not (or should not) have any of the harmful chemicals described above. For special occasions, some salons have shimmering highlights to make you sparkle. clear when first applied, just in-case you have to run some errands. And if you choose to add a light shimmer we can add gold, bronze or silver dust. After the Tan: After your organic spray tan or regular spray tan, do not wash for at least ten hours. If you had tape applied or lotion or jelly to your fingernails and toenails, carefully remove this.If any residual from the tanning product remains on your body, just pat it dry with light tissue paper. Don't rub the area as it will cause streaking. If any of your clothing became stained or tanning solution is on it, wash them immediately in warm water. If they are natural fibers, the solution should come out. Be aware that some fibers will retain the tanning solution. When the ten hours is up, and you wish to shower, only use soap where you need it and do not scrub or use any depilatory or shaving to the skin. When you get out of the shower, if you see that there are streak marks in any area, just blend then in very easily. Try to avoid exercise after the tan as the sweat from a workout after getting sprayed could cause streaking. Pools and hot tubs which contain chlorine will fade the tan quicker, so it is advised that you try to avoid these or expect that your tan will not last as long. Use a moisturizer two times a day on your skin to keep it soft. Since the tan disappears when your skin naturally exfoliates, keeping it moist will cause less exfoliation and keep yourself tan longer. For the first night, you may want to lie on towels so no organic spray tan solution or airbrush solution gets on your sheets. Most organic tanning sprays do not have SPF. Therefore, if you are going out in the sun, be sure to still apply sun lotion to prevent a burn. Usually, most people have no problems with their skin with the organic spray tanning, but be advised, if you do have sensitive skin, it is best to ask a salon if they can do a test spray on you to make sure that you can tolerate the spray before you take on a full body spray tan. Also, on a bit of humorous side, if it is raining the day of your organic spray tan, it is actually advised to reschedule your appointment. The rain will definitely streak the tan as you leave the salon.
