Is An Airbrush Tanning Business Really Worth It?

An airbrush tanning business can be a very lucrative and fun career. You can even do it part time spare time if you have family, school, or other businesses you are involved with.

A spray tanning business can be in a fixed location, or it can be mobile. You can have both services as well.

If you are a current tanning salon or spa owner you can start an airbrush tanning business as an upsell to existing customers. Who doesn't want a nice looking tan?

The bad news is that most salon owners or people who start up an airbrush tanning business make many common mistakes, and their marketing is not nearly good enough to maximize their potential.

The good news is these mistakes are easily avoided when you arm yourself with the right knowledge, resources, and tools. I'll get to those in a moment.

First, lets talk about the income potential. The average custom airbrush tan is around $40-$80 for if it's done in the salon. You will find prices as low as $25 and as high as $250. Most salon offer other options like leg tanning, arms, and other custom options.

A mobile airbrush tanning business is not much different in terms of pricing. Generally it's higher than an in-salon session. But you are going to have to take a look at your market to see if it will support higher prices. I've seen competitors offering in-home tanning for just $25 as a special introductory offer.

If you charge $40 per session in your airbrush tanning business, and you do one per day (low), 5 days per week, that's $200 in your pocket, not counting expenses.

But wait, this is where most salon owners and mobile airbrush tanning pro's fumble the ball.

All the money is in the back end. Not the front end! See, most airbrush tanning businesses are looking at how much they can make from each customer off of one sale, and then they forget about them.

What you have to do is provide more options before and after the sale (upselling). This does not have to be high pressure selling. You simply ask them if they would like to take advantage of another service. If they say no, you finish up their session. Then, you explain the benefits of caring for their spray tan and sell them a 'touch up kit'.

In addition, you can upsell a 'maintenance' program'. And on top of that, you can leave a brochure that lists all of your current 'self tanning' products and airbrush tanning services for 'bounce back' sales (they buy stuff from a your catalog or brochure).

And if they don't buy anything, you make sure to follow up in the mail and through email with tips, information, and more offers.

So lets look at the math. Lets say you do an average of 10 custom airbrush tanning business sales per week (low) at $40 per sale (low-ish). And 2 of these people buy additional products and services from you at an average of maybe $50 (low). That's an additional $100, making your total for the week $500 instead of $400. And that does not include future product and services purchases and referrals.

Do not settle for one front end sale. If you do, you are leaving lots of money on the table.
